Commercial satellite imagery of Yuchi Naval Base in February 2025 provides the current pier-occupancy baseline. Surface combatants — including vessels consistent with Type 052D destroyer and Type 054A frigate profiles — are visible alongside the expanded pier infrastructure. Submarine presence indicators in the dedicated submarine berth area are consistent with active operational use. The logistics compound adjacent to the piers shows active vehicle and equipment traffic, and a support vessel is visible at the northern pier approach. The February 2025 imagery captures the base in what appears to be a normal operational posture without unusual dispersal or surge indicators.

February imagery over Shandong Province can be affected by winter haze and low-angle sun conditions that reduce image contrast and complicate vessel-type identification. Submarine presence may not be detectable if boats are submerged at pierside or in any covered maintenance structure on the base. Vessel class identification from commercial imagery relies on length, beam, and superstructure silhouette and carries inherent uncertainty without access to higher-resolution tasked products.

National Maritime Foundation analysis published in 2023 documented Yuchi Naval Base as undergoing a significant expansion phase, with commercial satellite imagery showing new pier structures extending the base's submarine berthing capacity, enlarged submarine support and maintenance buildings, and additional surface combatant berths along the Guzhen Bay waterfront. The base hosts PLAN North Sea Fleet submarines alongside surface combatants and is assessed as playing a growing role in PLAN north-coast basing strategy as the service expands both its submarine and surface combatant fleet. The expansion tracked in 2023 imagery is consistent with broader PLAN infrastructure investment across all three fleet commands.

Submarine presence at Yuchi is subject to denial-and-deception activity — the base's location close to Qingdao headquarters means submarines may be redistributed between the two facilities depending on maintenance schedules. Surface combatant presence varies with operational cycles and port visits. The NMF analysis relied on commercial imagery at standard resolution, which may not resolve specific submarine variant identifications at berth.
